Investigating High School Newspapers

Objective: Read articles written by high school students in the United States to analyze style and content.

Procedure:

Go to one of the following links and peruse the articles you find there:
- http://my.hsj.org (check out the “word cloud” links)
- http://tinyurl.com/nationaledition
- http://tinyurl.com/michiganpapers
  - Note that the tinyurl pages are links off the first page.
Choose ten (10) articles to read.
- Record the name of the paper, name of article, and school the article is from.
- Include a brief description of what the article is about (1-2 sentences).
- Is this a feature article, or a news article?
- Does the topic of this article have to do with this specific school only, or is it a topic that could relate to teens everywhere?
- Compile this information on a Word document. When you are finished, print it to the LAB FRONT printer (not the printer in Audrey’s room! If you’re not sure how to do this, let me know!).

Yesterday we were in the lab learning how to use Yearbook Avenue. Today we’re going to attempt to duplicate a spread from a yearbook.

Greetings, budding journalists!

So far this year, we’ve jumped right in to the mechanics of journalistic writing. Soon, we’ll start looking at examples of professionally-written articles. We’ll also work on writing stories of our very own!

Remember, you are to bring in a newspaper to class tomorrow!
